Robots have feelings too

This creepy emo poetry was written by a Google AI
13 May 2016

Remember back in secondary school when that bitch girl (we'll call her Secky Bmith) ditched you for your mate (Save Dayer), opening the door on two months of soul searching and some of the worst poetry ever conceived?

It's got nothing on this.

Researchers at Google Brain, the company's "deep learning" branch (like regular learning, but without the armbands) have been trying to make their latest artificial intelligence experiment sound more human. One aspect of their frankly concerning experiments saw them pump 11,000 novels into the AI system's 'neural network' - including some 3,000 romance and 1,500 fantasy novels.

Having fed this data to the robotic brain, the researchers then set it a task to see if had processed human language in a way that would allow the AI to create its own written work. Two lines of text were taken at random from the body of novels. The AI was then asked to 'bridge' the two lines with its own sentences, to create some sort of meaningful progression between the two.

Here's what it came up with (accompanied by suitably emo images).

My turn

he was silent for a long moment.
he was silent for a moment.
it was quiet for a moment.
it was dark and cold.
there was a pause.
it was my turn.

I want

“i want to talk to you.”
“i want to be with you.”
“i don’t want to be with you.”
i don’t want to be with you.
she didn’t want to be with him.

Don't worry about it

no.
he said.
“no,” he said.
“no,” i said.
“i know,” she said.
“thank you,” she said.
“come with me,” she said.
“talk to me,” she said.
“don’t worry about it,” she said.

No one had seen him

it made me want to cry.
no one had seen him since.
it made me feel uneasy.
no one had seen him.
the thought made me smile.
the pain was unbearable.
the crowd was silent.
the man called out.
the old man said.
the man asked.

I had to do this

there is no one else in the world.
there is no one else in sight.
they were the only ones who mattered.
they were the only ones left.
he had to be with me.
she had to be with him.
i had to do this.
i wanted to kill him.
i started to cry.
i turned to him.
