Man smuggles booze into festival in the most genius way we've ever seen

One of the annoying things about music festivals – outside of the mud, the potential for contracting trenchfoot and having to sleep in a tent with your snoring mates – is how expensive they can end up being. Even once you’ve set aside cash for the actual ticket, you’ve got the equipment (tents and sleeping bags), you’ve got to get yourself there by car or by public transport, and you have to pay for stuff inside the campsite. Drinks are especially expensive – £6 for a pint of warm cider? Sign me up! (Don’t. Don’t sign me up.)

All of this expenditure was getting a bit much for American festival-goer Alex, though, so he devised probably the most genius plan of all time: he buried his booze on the campsite several weeks before the festival started. Then, once he was in, he dug it back up.

Three weeks before Electric Zoo festival, Alex buried a water bottle full of vodka. Then… he waited.

According to LADBible, Alex took his inspiration “from pirates”, with him and his mates “wanting to see if they could bury treasure without it being disturbed”. 

“I've been going to Electric Zoo for over four years now so I know the layout very well,” he said. “And the planning of the burial was simple.”

He and his gang used Google Maps to mark their spot on the map, and used GPS so they knew where it would be. Once it was time to retrieve the bottle, the objective changed: “remove the bottle without attracting attention”.

“The hardest part was trying not to raise any suspicions, because there’s quite a lot of cameras and festival staff around. Once we got to the GPS spot, we all huddled around it. I did a double take to make sure we were in the clear and then one of us dug up the vodka.

“All in all, it took about 10 minutes.” 

Since his escapades went viral, Alex has started working on a book full of secret hints and tips for making festivals cheaper – and has probably already started next year’s booze-burying plan, too.
