Well you're not going to nip down the shops in it.

This is the Bloodhound SSC - a supersonic car hoping to set a new land speed record when it begins its runs on a special South African track next year - with a top speed of around 1,000 miles per hour (it's a nice round number to aim at), a speed that will see it cover a mile in 3.6 seconds.

Measuring 13.4m long and weighing in at 7.5 tonnes, a Jaguar V8 (that doesn't power the wheels, but drives a pump for a liquid oxidiser), a collection of rockets and a Rolls-Royce Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine will power the Bloodhound to its trouser-ruining top speed.

The project, led by Richard Noble and a team of engineers, has been in the works since 2008. The almost-complete car (it's about 95 per cent ready) will now go on show for three days in a East Wintergarden venue at Canary Wharf.

RAF Wing Commander Andy Green will be the lucky (brave?) man guiding the Bloodhound to its record run - set to take place in mid-2016.

A two-metre-tall tail fin will keep the Bloodhound pointing in the right direction

Quickly.
