Back in August 1997, Rare ruined social lives.
Or, should the perfect evening consist of screaming at your best mate for "SCREEN WATCHING LIKE A CHEATING F*CK", radically improved them.
GoldenEye 007 was a seminal release for the Nintendo 64 - a game that collected hyperbole like stamps and introduced many to the delights of multiplayer gaming. While many subsequent console titles have taken up its baton and surpassed it, this roughly-hewn gem is still seen by many in the ShortList offices as "one of the best".
So you'll understand our glee at discovering that 3D game artist Jude Wilson has spent a great deal of effort recreating the classic level 'Facility' for the modern Unreal game engine - and it looks utterly beautiful.
"I have combined the N64's original layout with the film's look and feel using Unreal Engine 4," writes Wilson in the details of his video. "I have tried to get it as realistic as possible, using the film's interiors, props and lighting but remaining true to the original game at the same time."
The complicated niggles of film and character licences has so far prevented Rare from remaking or reviving their classic Nintendo title. We're keeping our fingers crossed that interest in Wilson's efforts might convince the money men it's worth renegotiating.
