This man’s first words after waking from a 48-day coma are awesome
We wake up peckish after sleeping for just eight hours every night, so we can’t even begin to imagine the serious hunger pangs you'd suffer from after rousing from a seven-week coma.
Actually, thanks to Jake Booth’s first waking words, we now can begin to imagine exactly that.
The 35-year-old American man and former Sheriff’s deputy, who suffered an enormous heart attack back in February, was taken to hospital in Florida where he battled slim odds to come around from a coma that lasted 48 days.
Shortly after miraculously opening his eyes, he began to quietly ask for something. Something important, profound, and very urgent. These are the four words he fought to say out loud:
“I want Taco Bell.”
Absolutely incredible. Agonisingly, Booth had to wait a further 22 days before he was cleared to eat solid foods and his wish could be granted. But when that magic all-clear came around, he did what any one of us would do after such a long time without delicious Mexican food: sit back, set jaws to chow, and nosh through eight and a half tacos from the US fast food chain.
“We’d all been waiting an entire month for him to eat those tacos,” Booth’s brother Jason Schwartz told USA Today in an interview. “It was symbolic of the entire thing — more of a metaphor of him having woken up and being given a second chance at life.”
Taco Bell were so touched by Booth’s request that they sent the bed-bound patient a sweater with a hand-written card.
Schwartz is currently looking to help his brother’s massive medical bills with a GoFundMe page, which you can find here.
