Three rolls out 5G home internet but only for some

The rest of you will have to wait

19 August 2019

More mobile carriers are launching 5G networks, and Three is the latest to join the gang. But those waiting to upgrade to a 5G phone may be a little disappointed.

While EE and Vodafone launched their 5G network as part of new mobile contracts, Three’s 5G offering is only currently available as a home broadband connection.

The idea is you will not need to connect the box to a landline so there is no line rental fee. Three's router instead connects directly to the 5G mobile signal to provide an internet connection. It simply needs to be plugged into a spare socket.

According to Three, the router can support up to 64 devices and £35 per month will provide you with unlimited data.

So, what is the setback? Currently, the network is only available in a limited number of locations in central London - Camden, Camberwell and Southwark.
However, Three does intend to continue to roll out its 5G network to other locations, with the hope of having it available in 25 towns and cities by the end of 2019. The locations include Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh.
And for those Three customers waiting for a mobile 5G contract, the provider has said they will be available later in the year (we're still waiting on an exact date).
