Today is an extremely sad day for movies. Tony Scott, one of Hollywood's most important directors, has died. The 68-year-old Brit was one of the men responsible for creating the blockbuster aesthetic we see so often today and cinema will be a duller industry without him in it.

Maverick goes rogue - Top Gun
The film which truly launched Scott became one of the defining films of the 80s and gave Tom Cruise his first chance to play the lead. This scene shows how comfortable Scott was with the action elements of the film and allowed us a sneak peek at the kinetic energy that was to come from his later work.

After Top Gun, Scott re-teamed with Cruise for another bombastic classic, this time set in the world of stock-car racing. In this scene, we get a burst of 80s power-rock soundtracking a thrilling end to the Daytona 500.

The Sicilian - True Romance
Pairing Scott with up-and-coming screenwriter Quentin Tarantino was a genius idea and in 1993, True Romance gave both of them a career highlight. It was a change of pace for Scott and in this classic scene, we get to see two acting heavyweights just talk. No explosions involved.

Ramsey V Hunter - Crimson Tide
Scott's 1995 submarine thriller was a masterpiece of tension and this scene showcases the powerhouse performances of Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. It allowed Scott a chance to showcase that he can make an argument between two man seem just as thrilling as a car chase.

Arguably Tony Scott's best film and definitely his most underrated, this 2001 offering saw Robert Redford and Brad Pitt caught up in a world of espionage. This scene gives us a classic Tony Scott montage as we see Redford impart his spy wisdom to Pitt.

Pita gets kidnapped - Man On Fire
In the 2004 thriller, Scott re-teamed with Denzel Washington for one of his most popular films. In this scene, he turns a potentially generic shootout into a stylised heart-thumper that brings in techniques that he often liked to utilise. Plus it was a big surprise to see our hero get injured so early in the film.
