We've come a long way from Pong. A long, long way.
What you're about to watch in the following video isn't a real apartment in Paris. Those aren't real white drapes hanging over brightly-lit windows, it's not a real kitchen (it would never be that neat) and those aren't real rugs. This whole environment has been created in the UNREAL Engine 4, a tool for generating video games.
It's not exactly a playable experience: Digital artist and level designer Benoît Dereau, who's worked on games including Dishonored, posted the video to demonstrate the sort of textures and worlds that can be created with modern game engines, pointing towards what the PC and console games of the future will look like. Were you to try and fill this world with AI characters and animations on modern machines, everything would slow down to unplayable levels.
Still, it's terrifying to see what the future generations of GTA could look like. Plug this into an Oculus Rift VR headset and we may never redecorate the office ever again.
