Virtual reality has peaked now you can learn about science with a hologram of David Attenborough

I don’t know about you, reader, but I feel that the virtual reality revolution is still lacking its killer app. 

Sure, mucking around with batarangs as Gotham’s number one detective is fun – a lifelong dream – and the wacky world of Rick and Morty is obviously tailor-made for interactive VR. Who doesn’t want to smash that up that sociopathic genius’s lab?

But good as those undoubtedly are, we’re still waiting patiently for the big one, that VR experience that changes the way you look at the potential of technology forever. 

Enter…a hologram of Sir David Frederick Attenborough. 

You heard. The GOAT naturalist is going to star in an all-new VR showcase, courtesy of Sky and London’s Natural History Museum. The state-of-the-art experience, called Hold the World, is a fusion of ‘interactive video game technology and TV documentary’, granting users a guided tour from Sir David’s hologram.

The veteran broadcaster will offer insights into fossils, bones and skulls from the museum’s collection, all of which you can interact with as Attenborough soothingly elaborates.

Name me five things in the world right now that sound more appealing than that. I’ll wait. 

“Hold The World offers people a unique opportunity: to examine rare objects, some millions of years old, up close,” Sir David said. “It represents an extraordinary new step in how people can explore and experience nature, all from the comfort of their own homes."

There’s no release date yet, but Ars Technica report that Hold the World will launch on Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and iOS.

Now, let’s all just sit back and relish that photo of Sir David Attenborough looking desperately uncool in in an Oculus headset.
