An American cop becomes a terrorist-fighting hero
April 15, 2013, saw one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in recent American history. At the Boston Marathon, an event attended and enjoyed by tens of thousands of people, brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev detonated two bombs, killing three people and injuring hundreds more.
As Boston and the world at large reeled from the attack, a manhunt began to track down the terrorists. The stirring new movie Patriots Day is based on the events of that day and those that followed, and the people who risked their lives to find the Tsarnaev brothers.
Patriots Day is directed by acclaimed director Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor) and stars Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons. The film centres on police sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg) as he joins the mission to find the terrorists before they strike again. In a race against time, Saunders pursues evidence that might lead to the arrest of the Tsarnaevs.
Berg gives the film his signature grit and intensity, crafting a thriller that’s as inspiring for its depiction of bravery in the darkest times as it is horrifying in its depiction of real events. Patriots Day debuts in UK cinemas on 23 February, but ShortList readers can see it at special preview screenings across the country on 22 February. Secure your seat and be one of the first to watch one of the most riveting films of the year.
