Matthew McConaughey’s charismatic businessman Kenny Wells exclaims ”I had a dream… it was the gold calling!” in new thriller Gold. This twist-laden tale of a modern-day prospector and luckless dreamer is inspired by true events surrounding the Bre-X mining scandal. Raised in the mining business, Wells follows in his father’s footsteps, chasing a gold rush in pursuit of his own American dream. He teams up with geologist Mike Acosta (played by Edgar Ramírez from The Girl On The Train) who warns Wells: “Finding gold… It’s like a drug, because it hooks you!” The addiction sees the pair battle the elements and angry wildlife amid the uncharted jungles of Indonesia before striking gold. Big time.
Set in the Eighties, the film follows Wells as the guy who’s got what everybody wants, but now faces an even bigger battle to keep it. Surrounded by two-faced bankers, and corrupt politicians angling to make a play to bring him down, can his dream survive? See it to watch the master of method McConaughey. The Oscar-winning star of Dallas Buyers Club piled on the pounds with burgers and shakes to play the magnetic Wells – and he delivers a trademark bravura performance. The screenplay made Hollywood’s infamous ‘Black List’ of the best unproduced scripts and is brought to life in compelling style by Stephen Gaghan (the Oscar-winning writer/director of Trafic and Syriana). Prepare for a wild ride in an underdog tale fuelled by obsession and the lengths a man will go to keep his dream alive.
