Normally we’d balk at any mention of Christmas before December, but there’s no other way of saying this: Christmas has come early for you.
In fact, all your Christmases have come at once. Gift-wrapped in a magazine. Yet again, the ShortList Film Club, with Stella Artois, is bringing you high-quality cinema at a price anyone can afford: free. And it’s quite possibly our biggest film to date.
Bridge Of Spies (out 26 Nov) is the latest belter from the man who’s made more belters than anyone else who’s ever worn a belt: Steven Spielberg. It tells the surprisingly little-known true story of the first attempt at a prisoner exchange during the Cold War, and the insurance lawyer, James Donovan, who was thrust into the whole affair.
Donovan, played by Tom Hanks, is charged with giving a token defence to a British-born Soviet spy, Rudolf Abel (played by Mark Rylance), in a US Federal court. It’s not looking good for Abel, but then, when CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Powell) and his U-2 spy plane are shot down over the USSR, the international diplomacy version of swapping Panini stickers commences, with Donovan as unofficial middle-man for the US, flitting across a newly built Berlin Wall in an attempt to secure a deal.
Now, you can Google the outcome if you like. Or you can take advantage of one of our six free screenings of this Oscar-buzzing film. Just head to the link below and away you go. Merry Christmas.
