Watch the new Fast & Furious 8 trailer starring Charlize Theron and Dwayne Johnson
"It's time to get lit"
The cast of everyone’s favourite street racer films is back with an eighth instalment: The Fate of the Furious, out 14 April 2017. F8, fate…get it?
The franchise is one of the top ten highest grossing franchises ever, raking in around $4bn so far. And the trailer, released today, gives us a glimpse of what we’re in for – it’s all we could hope for and more.
There’s an obligatory drag race in the trailer but it is a blip among the madness that sees cars taken out by a wrecking ball, aero escapes from the Po Po by driving onto planes, a tank, an arctic chase and some questionable (but also who cares) physics that involves cables, car doors and flipping vehicles.
With the instruction that “it’s time to get lit” we delve back into the Fast & Furious world to a suitably trappy soundtrack.
The gang has moved on somewhat from where we last left them having a montage on a beach. Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and the rest of the team have returned to relative normality.
That all changes when Charlize Theron turns up as a cyber terrorist and ropes Dom into returning to the dark side. There’s a lot of talk about family and betrayal as the crew tear up New York, Cuba and the Barents Sea, and in the trailer we see Charlize kiss Dom while Letty watches on (wtf, Dom?).
In Universal’s words:
“Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.”
The newest instalment in the franchise sees the return of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell and of course Vin Diesel.
Charlize Theron and Scott Eastwood are new additions, but the one we’re most excited to see join the Fast crew is Dame Helen Mirren, who insisted on doing her own driving.
