Console manufacturers are a predictable bunch. After the hype of the initial launch has died down, a 'newly designed' model will inevitably rear its different coloured head, sucking in those fanboys who'd quite like a white/black version of the black/white console they purchased 12 months earlier.
The latest console war is no different. After Sony revealed that their DualShock 4 controllers would be available in both blue and red (could blue and red PS4s be in waiting in the wings?), Microsoft have let slip an image of a white Xbox One console.
Posted on internet treasure trove Reddit, the image reveals that Xbox One employees will receive a white version of the console with an accompanying albino controller and assorted launch day goodies. In a slick touch, the employee version also sports a unique engraving: "I made this". Xbox director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb joined the discussion thread to offer his own praise of the white console, and to answer the inevitable question of when it might make its way to general release: "maybe waaaay in the future."
Given Microsoft's history of releasing special editions, we'll read into that as a "definite yes, when the sales start to dip". Here's a brief history of their colour changing ways:
