An American Mormon missionary escaped with his life yesterday after being injured in the Brussels airport terrorist attack, having previously being caught up in both the Boston marathon bombing in 2013 and last year's Paris attacks.
19-year-old Mason Wells (pictured above, left) was among nine Americans that were confirmed injured after the double attacks, which left at least 14 dead at Brussels airport, and killed 20 on a train carriage on the Metro line in Maelbeek.
Some of the shrapnel from the nail-shrouded suitcase bombs hit Mason, who also suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and second and third-degree burns on his face and hands but, thankfully, avoided any more serious injury and is expected to make a full recovery. A Mormon official told his family that, "despite being on the ground and bleeding [Mason] actually had a sense of humor and remained calm through the situation".
Chad Wells, Mason's father, told ABC News, "This is the third time that, sadly, in our society, that we have a connection to a bomb blast. We live in a dangerous world and not everyone is kind and loving."
Both Chad and Mason were a block away from the finish line of the Boston Marathon, waiting for Mason's mother Kymberley, who was running in the race, when two pressure cooker bombs exploded on April 15, 2013 with both escaping injury.
He was also in Paris on 13 November last year when a series of attacks shook the French capital, again, managing to survive intact.
"He shared with us that he was extremely close to the blast where he was burned by it," his father Chad said about his third dice with death. "It's a blessing from God he's alive."
